Just a Kidney connects Living Kidney Donors to Waitlisted Transplant Recipients in a positive and impactful way and exponentially growing the pool of viable living donors to save more lives!
Sign upWe started Just a kidney because there are not enough Living Kidney Donors to meet the demands of Waitlisted Transplant Recipients Nationwide. There are approximately 100,000 people in the U.S. waiting for a kidney donor every year. Only about 17,000 of those people will receive a kidney and less than half of those will come from a living donor. Living Kidney donations offer the best opportunity for a longer survival rate, lasting nearly twice as long as kidneys from deceased donors. The number of Living Donations are flat over the past decade, ranging between 5,500 to 6,700 and are projected to decline as the majority of Living Donations come from older, aging generations.
Driven by first hand experience, CEO Marcelle Chaffin understands Waitlisted Kidney Transplant Recipients’ needs and the current barriers that result in long wait times for kidney transplants – less than 20% of the waitlist, annually, find a match and undergo a kidney transplant. Chaffin is passionate about making the process better and the pool of Living Kidney Donor resources greater as she has been going through the process herself.
Ed has been waiting for 4 years for a kidney transplant and together they have been inside the system experiencing the impact that 4 years of his dialysis treatment has had on their family – physically, mentally and financially.
